About two weeks ago, a new bakery opened up in North York called Bake Code !
This is the first Canadian store for this Taiwanese chain bakery, who strives to "combine European baking techniques with Asian pastry recipes".
Address:
4910 Yonge St.
Unit 101
North York, ON
M2N 5N5
Phone: 647-346-3888
Website: http://bakecode.com/
Hours:
Mon-Fri ............ 8am-Midnight
Sat-Sun ............. 10am-Midnight
The store was packed with people on a Saturday afternoon, around 4pm. My first impression of the place was very negative as there was a huge group of people, who were all dressed up, taking up all the seats in the store, running around to take group photos and chatting up really loudly.
The store was already crowded with people checking out this new bakery and their 'partying' in the store made it much worse.
It also didn't help that their own bakery staff was running around with big baskets of bread, not knowing what exactly to do with it. And of course, everyone had the typical Asian attitude with no personal boundaries and not saying "excuse me".
The experience at the cashier wasn't so pleasant either. I went with my roommate and shared the same tray for our bread. I went first and while I was telling the cashier that I'm only taking one of the breads and that my roommate behind me was taking the rest, she stopped me mid-sentence as soon as I said 'just one of the breads' and was making a face at me.
I had to continue to explain myself twice as she kept asking me if I was only taking one. After having to deal with all the hectic crowd in the store, this made me feel even worse about this place.
I understand that they were busy, as it was only their 2nd day of opening, but I felt that they could have done much better.
Based on my first visit, I really didn't want to visit them again.
However, I kept thinking about their Japanese cheesecake that were sold out at my first visit.
So, after much contemplation, I decided to just give them a second chance.
The store atmosphere was much better this time. The crowd had died down and they had more cakes on display!! :3

I understand that they were busy, as it was only their 2nd day of opening, but I felt that they could have done much better.
They seemed to have more savoury/meal type of buns and breads rather than sweet snacks like cookies and biscuits.
What I liked about this place is that they have a Chatime express where you can also order your Chatime favorites to eat with your breads! :)
Bubbletea + Sweet pastries = HEAVEN :D
They had these small sample baskets beside each of their breads which was great!
Ahah, but I think they spelled "Gangnam" wrong :P....and this one was disappointing as it tasted nothing like Kimchi.
The back of the store is the kitchen where they were all busy at work!
This one was really good.
It tastes exactly like the sugar coated brick toasts I used to have as a child.
Before visiting their store, I went on their website and was looking forward to trying their Japanese cheesecake. However, it seemed to be their most popular menu and were sold out by the time I arrived ;_____;
I ended up getting a cupcake, a Croissant Brulee, and an earl grey latte :3 Yumm
The price seems fair for that "high end pastry" they are trying to serve but I personally wouldn't be going back much as I'd prefer cheaper Chinese/Korean bakeries even if it's less fancier looking.
The box for the cupcake was really cute.
Yupppp, it's Chatime! I got a hot drink because it was cold that day, but I wish I had gotten a bubbletea >____<
Cream custard filling in the middle!
It tastes just like those Chinese/Japanese custard bread you can get at Asian supermarkets, with just an addition of a custard cream in the middle. Orrrrr like that Korean snack called "Custard"!
Croissant Brulee!
Crunchy, sugary exterior with a soft inner bread!
It was good, but nothing too special :P
+ Second Visit!
Based on my first visit, I really didn't want to visit them again.
However, I kept thinking about their Japanese cheesecake that were sold out at my first visit.
So, after much contemplation, I decided to just give them a second chance.

However, it wasn't only the number of people that lessened in the store, their selection of breads were much less than their first week of opening.
Also, they no longer had those sampling baskets ;____;
Left black box is for the cheesecake and the right box for the roll cake!
I guess they couldn't find the right sized box for their cakes yet :/
I opened up the box and the cheesecake was sliding off its tray as it's too big for this box.
Compared to my first experience, the cakes were really really good >___<
The Japanese Cheesecake was really fluffy and moist and just melted in my mouth.
But one slice was just too small to be satisfied ;_____;
Also, $4 (approx, inc tax) for this small piece of cake seemed too pricey, considering how Uncle Tetsu's sells their whole cake for $10.
I was happily eating the cakes and thinking that I misjudged them when I found a small black piece of something on my cheesecake. It looked almost like an eyelash, and I stopped eating as soon as I saw it.
I felt disappointed again, and firmly decided that I'll never go back :/
I really wished it would be great as it's close by, and was hoping to make it a regular bakery spot.
But on both trips, they really disappointed me and made me not want to go back, ever again.
Boohoo ;_____;
